Our 3rd-grade class and Mr. George's kindergarteners will be reading buddies this year! Reading to younger students will help the 3rd graders develop a love of reading and a greater motivation to read. Younger students will also read to their older buddies each time, as this allows younger readers to feel a sense of accomplishment while they build fluency. Students often become more positive about their ability to read and may also improve their reading skills. Ideally, our buddy visits will be ongoing, and older and younger students will become familiar with one another and nurture a mutual interest in reading. Here are some pictures from our first visit on Friday. The room was filled with excitement and conversations as the students got to know each other by sharing their "About Me" flip books.
Friday we worked on a STEM project that helps develop the 4C's: Collaboration, Communication, Creativity, and Critical Thinking. It was The Marshmellow Challenge. Students were given 4 items: spaghetti, string, tape, and a marshmellow. The challenge was to build the tallest freestanding tower in 18 minutes and the marshmellow had to be on the top of the tower! It was fun to see all the different ideas! Ask your child how they felt about this challenge.
